Titanic underwater

Titanic Discovery:
The Titanic was discovered September 1, 1985 at 1:05am by Dr. Ballard as part of a French-American scientific expedition.

With Dr. Ballard's expertise, two ships involved in the expedition were sent out to look for wreckage just north of where lifeboats had been retrieved from the Carpathia.

Using tracking instruments, a boiler from the ship was found. The wreck is located at 12,460 feet (2.5 miles underwater.) It lies on a gentle slope that overlooks a small canyon. It found that the ship had been torn into two parts, between the third and fourth funnels.

Many items were still in place, like the anchors. Some, like part of the bow, was buried more than 60 feet in the mud. Some disheartening items found included a doll's head and a pair of shoes.

A plaque in memory of those who lost their lives still resides at the site.
